Currently, there are 37 states and the federal government that have the death penalty. There are 20 jurisdictions that provide for alternative methods of execution, contingent upon the choice of the inmate. As of now many states only perform Lethal Injection but do offer other methods of execution upon request. Lethal Injection is considered the most humane way of execution.
